BTG 204 — Practical in Biotechnology

What you'll be able to do (official learning outcomes)

• manipulate the microscope to view different types of cells
• estimate the population density of cells in a medium
• carry out thin sectioning of cells, stain and view
• carryout aseptic protocol, extract DNA from a cell and view after gel electrophoresis; and
• explain PCR principles, primer design and the concept of cloning

Course contents

Microscopic examination of cells. Measurement of cell size using micrometer. Measurement of cell concentrations (microscopic enumeration, fresh weight, dry weight, packed cell volume). Microtome sectioning and microscopy. Aseptic techniques and autoclaving.
