CHM 304 — Atomic and Molecular Structure and Symmetry

• define the terms in the time-independent Schrodinger wave equation
• express equation for the 3D Schrodinger wave equation
• define Pauli Exclusion Principle and the Hund’s rule
• illustrate electron configurations for atoms in either the subshell or orbital box notations
• illustrate electron configurations of ions

Course contents

Schrödinger equation. Helium atom, ground and excited states, Spin and Pauli exclusion principle. Hydrogen molecule; Comparison of molecular orbital and valence bond theory, concept of resonance and configuration interaction. Coulson Fischer function. Molecular orbitals for diatomic molecules. Simple pi electron theory, Huckel theory.
