MME 505 — Nanoscience and Nanotechnology

What you'll be able to do (official learning outcomes)

• identify and control individual atoms and molecules
• make materials at the nanoscale deliberately
• explain enhanced properties of nanomaterials such as higher strength, lighter weight, increased control of light spectrum, and greater chemical reactivity than their larger-scale counterparts;
• apply nanoscale materials particles to create changes in the composition of the materials.

Course contents

Fundamental concepts in nanoscience and nanotechnology. Review of quantum mechanics. Nanosystems. Molecular dynamics. Scanning probe microscopy. Nanomaterials. Production and characterization of nanoparticles. Design of nanostructured systems. Nanomechanics of materials, Applications of nanosystems in the industry. Carbon nanofibres, Nanocomposites. Fabrication methods. Computational nanotechnology.
