GCE 205 — Theories of Counselling

• explain the concept and types of counselling theories
• differentiate between directive and non-directive counselling approaches; Education 583 New
• state the merits and pitfalls of each of the theories; and
• examine the place of theories in the counselling practice

Course contents

Meaning, qualities and functions of a theory. Need for and bases of theory in the counselling practice. Concept and types of counselling theories. Nature, techniques, strengths, weaknesses and application of Freud’s psychoanalytic theory. Individual psychology theory of Alfred Adler. Behavioural theories of counselling.
