PHY 205 — Thermal Physics

• On completion, the student should be able to
• discuss the concept of heat and temperature
• explain and determine thermodynamic processes
• explain and evaluate properties of real and ideal gase
• evaluate the consequences of the thermodynamic laws
• describe the basis of the kinetic theory; and

Course contents

The Foundations of classical thermodynamics including the zeroth and definition of temperature; the first law, work heat and internal energy; Carnot cycles and the second law; entropy and irreversibility, thermodynamic potentials, and the Maxwell relations. Ideal gas equation and internal energy, including internal molecular modes.
