Discussion of selection of the appropriate material for a variety of applications in terms of the materials’ properties, ease of manufacture and performance in the anticipated service environment. Case studies of selected materials in the design application of each of these materials for automotive parts. The course develops an understanding of the mechanics of complex practical situations through the establishment and solution of an appropriate boundary value problem.
