YOU 301 — Phonology of Yorùbá Language II

• apply the knowledge acquired in the sound system of the language to more issues on the phonology of the language
• explain Yorùbá language syllable structure
• analyse vowel harmony in Yorùbá language
• use the generative and optimality theories, among others, to analyse Yorùbá phonology, and
• explain optimality theory in phonology

Course contents

Relationship between phonology and phonetics. Phonology and Orthography. Examination of the phonological processes in the languages. Syllable structure. Assimilation. Nasalisation. Epenthesis. Vowel harmony. Vowel elision. Tonal processes. Reduplication. Loan words. Introduction of phonological theories. Distinctive feature theory.
