PHY 210 — Physics of Solid Earth

• describe the evolution and structure of the earth
• explain the dynamics of the earth’s atmosphere
• state the characteristics of the earth’s magnetic field
• compare geomagnetic field observations
• discuss the effect of sunspots and magnetic storms; and
• describe the theory of plate tectonics and continental drift

Course contents

Origin, shape, structure and major divisions of the earth. The Earth’s main magnetic field and its distribution. Electrical theory of the earth’s core and origin of the magnetic field, seafloor spreading, continental drift and plate tectonics.
