MUS 223 — Modal Counterpoint

What you'll be able to do (official learning outcomes)

• compose simple beautiful melodies to given Cantus Firmus or Fixed melodies
• have a thorough understanding and proper interpretation of the medieval and renaissance periods of Western European music
• identify the peculiarities in each of the species of Modal Counterpoint; and
• appreciate the special nature of African melodic lines and tonal structures

Course contents

Species Counterpoint in 2 or more parts in the five commonly employed ecclesiastical modes. Rules of melodic writing. Rules of harmonic writing in Modal Counterpoint. Study of some of the works of 16th Century composers, such as Palestrina, Lassus, Morley and Byrd.
