MUS 242 — Music of other World Cultures

What you'll be able to do (official learning outcomes)

• identify musical types from cultures other than Africa and the Western World
• employ elements of music in those cultures in their compositions
• become more musical and intelligently perceptive; and
• develop solid foundation for continued learning in the area of interest

Course contents

Survey of the music of various cultures of the (non-Western) world, such as American, Indian, Arabic, Chinese, Hebrew, Japanese and Nordic music. Individual characteristics of each of the cultures. Types of vocal music in culture. Classification and function of musical instruments.
